Ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when a portion of the nail plate, usually a sharp spicule, grows deep in the side and causes pressure on the surrounding skin. Ingrown toenails can be very painful, cause infection and need to be treated as soon as possible.

Some common causes of ingrown toenails include: wide nail plates, faulty nail cutting, tight footwear, skin growing over the nail plate.

Your Podiatrist will gently remove the nail portion that is causing the ingrown toenail, pain, inflammation and possibly infection. Your Podiatrist will cover your toe appropriately and then review you within 1-2 weeks to ensure it is healing and re-growing straight. You may also be advised to see your regular GP for a course of antibiotics if infection is suspected.

Your Podiatrist can also chat to you about a more permanent solution, if the ingrown toenail continues to occur.
